Which High5 gel to choose: Energy Gel or IsoGel? Both types of gel do the same job. However, IsoGel has a lighter consistency somewhere between a drink and a gel. Energy Gel has a slightly thicker consistency, but is less bulky and lighter in weight, which makes it easier to carry in larger quantities.
2:1 FRUCTOSE GEL
High5 DO NOT produce a 2:1 fructose gel. We believe that there is little real world benefit to such a gel for most athletes. The advantage of 2:1 is that you can potentially consume more carbohydrate (up to 90g per hour), but you would need to take 4 gels an hour to realise that benefit. The Glasgow University research tells us that Marathon runners will generally only take 2 to 3 gels per hour (46g to 69g of carbohydrate), even when instructed to consume more. This inability to consume 4 gels per hour negates the main benefits of a 2:1 gel formulation. So there is little upside to a 2:1 gel, but there is a major downside. A high fructose 2:1 gel would be very sweet, when athletes tell us time and again that they want a non-sickly gel.
